This Lamp Grows Plants in Spaces Without Sunlight
March 11, 2016 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
As I love double-duty designs for small and light-deprived spaces, Mygdal Plantlight fits the bill functioning as both a light fixture and planter. The lamp is a terrarium-like completely self-sustaining ecosystem where, the designers contend, plants can grow for years without any human intervention.
After a bit of experimentation designing a lamp for growing plants without sunlight, Emilia Lucht and Arne Sebrantke of German design studio We Love Eames brought Mygdal to life.
Based on the principles of photosynthesis, neither the pendant or tabletop version require direct sunlight or water.
The tabletop lamp utilizes a patent-pending electrically conductive glass coating which invisibly streams electricity along the surface, eliminating the need for a connection between the power source and its sunlight-replicating LED lights.
