They’re Like Peace in a Pod
November 12, 2009 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
Imagine yourself in the city all day with no place to rest and relax. Your not the type to rent a hotel room by the hour, and there’s only so long you can sit at Starbucks, besides it’s not so peaceful.
Enter the Sleepbox. Designed for public spaces like airports, railroad stations, and shopping centers, it is a small pod-like mobile space (2m x 1.4m x 2.3m) containing a bed with an automatic linen changing apparatus.
Sleepbox is equipped with a ventilation system, sound alerts, built-in LCD TV, WiFi, sockets for a laptop and charging phones. Under the lounges is a place for luggage. Payment is made on a shared terminal, which provides the client with an electronic key.
If the exterior could be modified to blend in with it’s surroundings, I could see this in an area of a public park area surrounded by trees. The public bench alternative for reposing 15 minutes to a few hours and no worry about getting arrested for loitering.

Not sure how I feel about this. It sort of freaks me out a bit…kindof like pod people. Says a lot about our society that we would need pods for people to catch a couple of zzz’s.

Because I can sleep anywhere, at any time, I had often thought of something like this over the years! Mostly at an airport when you have a few hours’ layover. But the pod in the park does creep me out a bit—you’re walking your dog and out comes a sleepy dude rubbing his eyes. That’s a bit of a weird mix of public and private not co-mingling too well….
