Ringing It in From the Garden
December 31, 2009 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
While ringing in the new year, many cultures believe that consuming anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes “coming full circle,” completing the year’s cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year’s Day will bring good fortune. Still others, as in many parts of the US, believe that eating food culled from the garden such as legumes, like black-eyed peas, will bring them good luck in the new year. Dining on cabbage, some people believe, will bring them fortune as cabbage leaves are considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. Rice, in some regions, is the lucky food eaten on New Year’s Day. Whatever you eat, Urban Gardens wishes you a Happy New Year.

If it’s between legumes and donuts, I’m going to go with the donut! Thanks for a fun post.
