New Spin on Planters and Design
July 6, 2010 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
I came cross this cool spinning “ferris wheel” planter while researching items to include in the small two-room garden shed I am designing with interior designer, Victoria Lyon for the upcoming Stamford Designer Show House. Though the location is certainly more peri-urban than urban, when invited to participate, I was intrigued by the challenge of designing a small interior and exterior garden space that could be anywhere and would embody the limited spaces design”gestalt” –as Ms. Lyon put it– of this blog.
The slightly rusted painted wrought iron planter is $795 from The Antique and Artisan Center in Stamford, CT. If you’re in the market for unusual garden objects like this one, make a trip to the center. You can be kind to the environment by riding the rails from Manhattan–it’s about an hour outside the city via Metro North Railroad and a five minute walk from the train station to the center.
Flanking the shed and greenhouse, part of the show house garden that will be receiving some tender loving care!
For our renovation of the garden shed and attached greenhouse, Urban Gardens and Victoria Lyon Interiors is teaming up with Eden Farms of Stamford, CT, and Bloomsbury Gardens of Old Greenwich, CT. On our design and eco-conscious agenda: edible gardens, a vertical garden and green wall, some moss “graffiti” artwork, and a great selection of cool garden furniture and accessories, all of which will be for sale.
The show house, which runs from September 25 until October 31, will feature rooms designed by celebrated interior designers Charles Spada of Boston and Beverly Balk of New York, and will showcase suppliers of high quality designed merchandise from all over the world.
I love the vines and love birds of this glass top round table and two chairs. From Greenwich Living Antiques and Design.
Last year’s show house attracted about 10,000 visitors, both consumers and trade, and was covered by media from Manhattan through Boston. This year’s show house, sponsored by the Hearst Connecticut Media Group, includes over twenty-five design spaces in a 9,000-sq.-ft. magnificent stately 1915 estate. Proceeds will benefit the Stamford Museum and Nature Center which is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of art as part of the natural/agricultural sciences and history.
Tickets, $30 including the Show House Journal, will be can be purchased at the door.

A Ferris Wheel Planter, how cool is that! I really love that patio set as well. Those woven bird nest chairs are really incredible art and function all in one as well. I’d love to have those in my yard. More please!
