Getting Hung Up on Wood

By hook or by Trook, I love these wood hooks hand carved by artist Geoffrey Fisher in England where he harvests most of the the wood from fallen trees near his Buckinghamshire Studio.

Fisher’s pieces are individually commissioned to order and crafted entirely by hand using materials from sustainable sources, such as woods from the forested areas surrounding his own home, a result of sustainable coppicing. This time of the year in his area of England, Fisher told me, all the farmers are cutting back their hedges and pruning their orchards so no living tree would ever be intentionally hurt in the process of his trook making.
Hooks with Ancestry
Each Trook has a unique story attached which is referenced on its tag. Some of the wood originates from Stoke Golding, Leicestershire where, in 1485, Henry Tudor defeated Richard Plantagenet, to become King of England. The tree from which this particular batch of Trooks was carved came from a site located on what modern historians believe was part of the original battlefield site.
Not every trook, Fisher explains, has such a prestigious lineage. Some are crafted from English Apple wood from his Dad’s back yard. “Although you could embellish the story a bit as he does live near Windsor Castle,” he added.
