Modern Shelters for Upwardly Mobile Birds
August 1, 2011 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
Nathan Danials designs modernist bird dwellings that humans will wish were large enough for them.
Available: Modernist Birdhouse with Pool
For “upper middle class modernist birds,” looking to enjoy their leisure time, this clear western red cedar and birch birdhouse has a water-tight pool accessible from a side entrance.
The habitat even sports two pool-side “chill-out” spots that hover above the water surface and act as a perch for the main house. Drinks please. Bird inhabitants might need to hire a pool guy as the pool area needs to be cleaned manually. 17 long x 10 high x 8.25 inches deep.
Mid-Century Birdhouse
A repeating clear cedar joinery and off-set entry draw your eye up to the sliver-like opening of the roof on this classic modern design, above. Sharp red paint finishes off this modern home, the envy of all modernist birds. 8.25 squared with 1.5 inch hole diameter, 9.5 inches at highest point.
Danish Modern Anyone?
Perfect for a sparrow or other small bird species, this mini house is accented by dual triangles. Feathered friends can hang out on the open air roof and perch, made of solid one inch red cedar, or in the main quarters which is painted red and blue solid birch plywood. 7 inches wide x 8 inches high with a depth of 5 inches.
Fit for a Loon
From his Loon Series, this is Danials’s modern interpretation of the classic bluebird house, made from a reclaimed “silverback” cedar to which he gives new life by giving the outside area a heavy coat of solid charcoal stain. The front panel has a just a kiss of white acrylic paint highlighting the raised grain, while the band of red across the bottom completes these designer digs for Minnesota’s state bird. The back panel is fully accessible by removing 4 screws and exposed screw heads on brim are treated with silicone. 6 inches deep x 6 inches wide x 12 inches high.

The Modernist Birdhouse with Pool . . . scale it up, put in a w-i-d-e arched doorway off centre, and I’d be super happy to have it as a summer retreat in my garden. I love it.

Love the colors in this one, it is so vibrant.Have always been a sucker for the gray/orange color combination and yet this one is more sophisticated. These guys are wonderful. They make a lovely pattern and I like the light. There is symmetry but lots of variety. Nice! Great job with the color and patterns!
