picNYC table is a grass-topped table that, according to its designer “brings the rural picnic into the urban residence.”

Haiko Cornelissen, a Dutch architect with offices in Amsterdam and New York, cultivated the idea to bring one step further the rural practice of agriculture not just to the city, but into the apartment. Urban farming is a fast growing phenomenon, notes the designer, and his folded lightweight aluminum tabletop offers a way to create a “surreal experience of nature in the city that literally transforms dining.”

No more need for wine coaster and spilt water only enhances the experience. The table top and legs form a strong framework for the grass, soil and stones (needed for drainage), but the designer leaves it open to the user to decide whether to add flowers, herbs or even vegetables. Unless you can find a teeny mower, the grass needs to cut by hand and, of course, its success depends on how much sunlight and usage the tabletop gets. But then again, there’s always sod.
