In Memoriam

Yesterday morning as I sat in this same chair, looking out the window at an equally beautiful bright blue sky, only 1/2 hour away havoc was being unleashed on a nearby elementary school leaving 26 people dead, including 20 children, in the worst school shooting in this country’s history.
Yesterday’s sky was not unlike the one I enjoyed on 911 right before I heard that horrible news. And like 911, texts, emails, and calls came in to me all day yesterday from near and far. Everyone wanted to know the same thing: why? And although the tragedy occurred close to my home, it’s a tragedy that, for everyone, hits too close to home. We’ve asked too many times before, and I suspect we will all continue to ask too many times more, how something this horrific could ever happen. At this very sad time, I don’t want to engage in political debate–that can come later. Right now I only want to share my deep feelings of sadness with the Newtown families, community, and the world.
A memorial fund has been established for the families and community effected by the December 14, 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook elementary school.

Robin, the Patch- at least Brookfield Patch- has also posted a blog by Jaimie Cura where you can post “I want to help’ and as ways to help trickle in you will be notified . I spent last night with my kids; my youngest made 20 luminaries with paper bags and votives, which we all set up on our front lawn, we went and sat at St. Rose Church in Sandy Hook, and as my oldest was getting ready for bed she voices what we all are feeling throughout this horrific event “I feel so helpless. I want to DO something more.” Sometimes, and I guess this is one of them, the best thing you can do is to just be there, hold close your nearest and dearest and let everything else take a back seat.

Oh Suzen, what a wonderful thing you and your children did together to honor the memory of the victims. Thank you for sharing about other sources where people can find a way to assist. We are all feeling so helpless as happens in the aftermath of such acts of senseless violence. It’s horrific when it happens to anyone, but particularly difficult to process when such young innocent lives are taken. Everyone is effected by this event in some way–the world mourns with the families and it will take time to heal. I don’t know if we can ever prevent such acts of horror, but I do know it’s high time we try a lot harder.
