Back from the sustainable design drawing board after the success of her Live Screen vertical garden we featured last year, designer Danielle Trofe, will be debuting her new Hourglass lighting series at Wanted Design during New York Design Week.

Two designs, the Hourglass Table Lamp and Floor Lamp, are each powered by the energy generated from the sand falling from top to the bottom. To provide the power for continuous directional LED illumination, the off-the-grid LED fixtures require physical engagement–flipping them over like an hourglass. Trofe designed the pieces to create an experience that would generate a greater awareness of the value and finite source of light energy. When the sand runs out, the user flips the lamp over to start generating additional light.

Both the table and floor models flip with ease to regenerate the light’s power, the floor lamp rotating on the hinge of its 4ft tall welded steel stand. Both lamps are powered by sand from recycled glass and are made using hand turned sustainable wood and handblown glass. The Table Lamp will be available in a choice of dark wood with black trim or light wood with white trim, and the Floor Lamp in a choice of dark wood with black stand or light wood with white stand.

Danielle Trofe will be exhibiting her lamps along with her Live Screen May 17-20 at Wanted Design 2013 in New York City.
