I love stylish and sustainable multi-functional design. So does ShiftSpace who’s teamed up with their friends at Shake Shack Philadelphia to plant a permanent Bike Park directly outside the restaurant on the corner of 20th Street and Sansom Street.

The Bike Park units will double as planters creating a corner urban garden while providing riders with a safe place to hitch up bicycles.

The idea for Bike Park emerged when the designers began thinking,”why do cars get all the parking?” then realized that fifteen bikes could fit into a single parking space. That got them thinking that since bike transportation was more sustainable, maybe they could design a bike parking system that would encourage more usage.

While pondering design options and considering that not all bikes are alike, the designers settled on the current Bike Park design which offers several locking places at different heights to accommodate a variety of bike styles and sizes.

Five to six Bike Park units will be installed within the next 10-14 days, with the first to be unveiled tonight October 16, 6-8 p.m, at Shake Shack where in addition to burgers, there will be complimentary Headwaters Pale Ale and Storm King Stout from Victory Brewing Company, along with some cool bike-friendly swag.

Bike Park units are made locally of laser cut powder-coated easily recycled aluminum. The design represents the pairing of urban intervention with sustainable design and aligns with Shake Shack’s stated commitment to sustainability.

It’s a win-win for the city and riders since cycling itself is sustainable by design, reducing oil usage and CO2 emissions to increase air quality, not to mention traffic. And Shake Shack should be happy that its cycling customers now have a place to park while fueling up after a ride.

The Bike Park event is part of the ninth annual DesignPhiladelphia, the yearly festival that celebrates and promotes design to “to brand Philadelphia as a 21st-century city shaped by design, technology, and business.”
