Milan Design Week 2014 Preview: Angelo Grassi Grows Vegetables on Furniture
April 2, 2014 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
Fuorisalone is where Angelo Grassi’s Ortofabricca will be on view.
I’m packing for my trip to Milan Design Week where I will be joining a stellar team of eleven design bloggers on the Modenus BlogTour. From Milan, I’ll report back from one of the world’s most anticipated and largest design events of the year. The entire city of Milan morphs into one enormous highly animated design event experienced at hundreds of venues in and around Milan. Much more to come on all of this…
Before I leave, here’s little preview of Ortofabbrica by Angelo Grassi, one of the designers by whom I am most intrigued and really looking forward to meeting in Milan.
Grassi’s “Vegetal” table and chair from his Ortofabbrica collection.
Grassi will be exhibiting his whitty and sustainable design project Ortofabbrica (Orto is Italian for vegetable garden) at Furoisalone, where designers reinterpret and adapt the latest trends in contemporary design with events and installations brought to life in public spaces and venues across the city.
The Vegetable Collection is Grassi’s series of furniture and accessory pieces that double as trellis-like structures for climbing edible plants and vines, such as ivy (not edible) or strawberries.
“Vegetal Umbrella,” stainless steel with supporting base.
In addition to a series of concrete furniture and accessories (like the concrete totes above, perfect as planters,) Grassi has created a group of “planted seating.”
Ortofabbrica’s tables, chairs, benches, and indoor-outdoor space dividers are constructed of zinc-plated wrought iron and stainless steel, all characteristic of Grassi’s reinterpretation of traditional everyday objects and his unconventional use of common materials like these welded mesh metals.
Ortofabbrica will certainly be just one of the many cool design projects I will see at Fuorisalone–one of the many design events I will be covering and sharing in the days and weeks to come. In the meantime, follow my Twitter stream @urbangardens and on Facebook. You can follow all the tour feeds with hashtag #BlogTourMilan.
Ortofabbrica will be on view from April 8-13 at Fuorisalone, Milan, Via Solari at the corner of Via Stendhal.
