Perched atop rolling mobile gardens adorned with plants, insect hotels, branches, shells and more, a group of spirited young women and girls–Princesses of the Earth and Climate–paraded recently down Paris’s rue du Chemin Vert (which happens to translate to “green path”) to Town Hall where local district representatives greeted them.

Through a collaboration between the social-ecological organization La Petite Rockette and Paris Label, an initiative dedicated to creating “playful and ecological urban art,” participants attended a mobile garden “throne” making workshop where they created the roving gardens.

Aiming to bring attention to global environmental issues, the gardens sported signs sharing the words of women like environmentalist Vandana Shiva, an outspoken Monsanto opponent and advocate for seed diversity who also speaks out about global climate change.

The parade of gardens was part of the local steelworkers association’s celebration of International Women’s Day. Each year they organize a march for women and girls around a specific theme–this year’s was The Recovery–and around which they offer free workshops and art installations.

La Petite Rockette began as a group of Parisian activist citizens who led efforts to reclaim disused neighborhood properties for reuse as artist housing and studios. The group has since acquired its own space where, in addition to a store selling reclaimed items, their Ressourcerie offers environmental awareness workshops, art courses for adults and children, and for free provides neighborhood residents with two multi-purpose spaces for rehearsals, small events, association meetings, classes, and exhibitions.
