Take a Riverfront Seat at DC’s Yards Park
July 31, 2015 by Robin Plaskoff Horton
On a former wharf and industrial site along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, the 5.5 acre waterfront Yards Park is the new centerpiece of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood just south of Capitol Hill.
Replete with a riverfront boardwalk, public art, and a great lawn for recreation and events, the park is a LEED Gold certified mixed-use development adjacent to the Washington Navy Yard and connected to National Park Stadium by a pedestrian bridge.
As a compliment to the park’s design and as a reflection of its maritime history, a series of landscaped outdoor rooms around the park feature custom-designed deck-style lounge chairs and wood undulating “wave” benches, six-foot diameter basket weave lattice tables and shade canopies designed by Friedberg & Partners in collaboration with Studio 431.
Canopies attached to a concrete wall provide shade for the park’s retail shops. The “wave” benches, which are mounted to granite slabs, were produced in 5-foot and 10-foot lengths with and without backs.
Flat on the bottom, the seats are curved on top then thin out at the crest of the curve, where they are held in place by a threaded rod. All of the custom park furniture and the canopies ship fully assembled to maintain quality fit and finish.

Is this the “High Line-ization” of the country’s abandoned infrastructure?
